BACK PAIN  முதுகு வலி

வாழ்க்கையில் முதுகு வலி வராதவர்கள் யாரும் இருக்க முடியாது. பொதுவாக முதுகுவலிஎன்பது கழுத்தின் அடிப்பகுதியில் இருந்து இடுப்புப்பகுதிவரையில் எங்கு வேண்டு
மானாலும் வரலாம். அதன் தன்மையும் பொறுக்கமுடியாத வலி முதல் மிதமான வலியாக அமையலாம்  ஆனால் எப்படியிருந்தாலும் முதுகுவலி என்பது ஒரு பிரச்சினைதான்

 CAUSES

The causes for back pain are so many
1.    some times it may be due to a life time bad habit
2.    Accidents
3.    Muscle strain and Sports injuries
4.    At times the cause is not known
5.    Diseases of the joints muscles and nerves
6.    Aging
7.    Calcium deficiency
8.    We can go on enumerating the causes

 SYMPTOMS

  Whatever be the cause the symptoms of Back pain are the same
1.      Persistent ache or stiffness along your spine
2.      Sharp and localized pain in the neck upper middle or lower back especially after some straining like bending and lifting
3.      Chronic back pain in the middle and lower back especially after sitting or standing for a long time
4.      Pain that radiates (moves) from the back to the buttocks thighs calf and toes
5.      Inability to stand without severe muscle spasm and support

WARNING SIGNS

1.       With back pain if you have NUMBNESS  TINGLING and LOSS OF CONTROL of movements it may be due to spinal cord disease
2.       When the back pain extends below the thighs it may be due to sciatica
3.       If the pain increases when you cough or laugh or bent forward it may be due to a prolapsed spinal disc
4.       If the pain is accompanied with fever painful urination and lower abdominal pain it may be due to urinary infection
5.       If you have a dull pain while lying or while getting down from the bed it may be due to osteoarthritis a degenerative bone disorder
 THESE ARE SITUATIONS WHEN YOU HAVE TO SEEK IMMEDIATE MEDICAL AID

DIAGNOSIS

Prior to performing complicated and expensive tests the doctor will do certain simple clinical tests like
   Locating the site of pain
   Assessing the range of mobility of the limb
   Functioning of the nerves concerned
1.      Blood and urine tests
2.      X Ray of the back and limbs
3.      C-T Scam
4.      MRI Scan
5.      Electromyogram EMG

TREATMENT

   For milder pain without any serious underlying problem or complication simple measures are sufficient they are

1.      Application of warmth or ice packs
2.      Milder pain relievers like Paracetemol Brufen etc
3.      Long term bed rest is mostly not advised
4.      Controlled and mild exercise is recommended
5.      Physical therapy like message ultrasound and heat
6.      Individualized and tailored exercise programs
7.      Exercises to strengthen the back and abd muscles
8.      Medications are useful to relieve pan but they are also harmful on prolonged usage
9.      Surgery may be needed in needed situations.
